PC software translation

We have been involved in software localisation for Windows operating systems since our foundation. Our office in Moscow at that time worked closely with the first PC pioneers in Russia who translated the first DOS and Windows operating systems into Russian, i.e. localised them correctly. The current head of the office, Mr Alexandre Nefedov, personally translated such programmes from English into Russian in the 1990s as Symantec software (Norton Commander, etc.) as well as collaborating on Intel and Microsoft documentation, but later in Germany.

Software localisation of PC programmes

Russian, like German, French or Chinese, is one of the languages for which fixed standards apply to the selection of terminology. Since official Microsoft glossaries have been publicly available to everyone, the translation of standard software into foreign languages has become an easy matter.

The special feature of our translations of PC software is that we rarely translate general and widespread programmes for the ordinary user, but rather subject-specific software of our customers. For example, software for battery dealers or PC programmes for construction companies that plan their projects on the computer first.

Software for software translation

The times when we used self-made programs for translating software strings are over. Components of modern PC software can be conveniently translated using modern CAT tools. At Alexxtec, we use our favourite tool SDL Trados for this.

It is a well-known fact that most programmes in the world are created in the English language, which is why the number of translation projects from English is also significantly higher in our translation agency than from German. Of course, we are just as happy to translate from German into other foreign languages.

Among the largest software localisation projects of recent times, we can mention the translation into Russian of the well-known communication programme VooV Meeting of the Chinese company Tencent, as well as the localisation of the control system of thermal printers into Polish and Russian languages.
